Arunachal Pradesh recently achieved a remarkable feat as the Donyi Polo tea estate won a prestigious award in the 'Teas of the World' contest held by AVPA in Paris. This makes it the first garden in the state to achieve such recognition. The awarded tea, named 'Golden Tippy,' received the Diplome Gourmet in the black tea category. This contest, organized by AVPA, acknowledges the gastronomic value of teas beyond regular consumption.
M
anoj Kumar, a senior official at Donyi Polo Garden, expressed joy at the honor, explaining that the winning tea was carefully crafted using traditional methods. The tea estate faced challenges as a non-traditional tea-growing area, but their dedication and adherence to good agricultural practices led to this success.
Donyi Polo tea estate, spanning 421 hectares, produces 15,000 kg of specialty tea out of a total of 15 lakh kg. The estate includes a Tea Artisan Centre managed by experienced women, headed by Junmoni Gogoi. The Tea Excellence Centre imparts the art of tea-making to those interested. The AVPA contest emphasizes traceable, unblended, unflavored teas harvested in whole leaves.
Importantly, Oriental Gardens, specializing in importing origin teas from India to Europe, played a key role in sourcing these award-winning teas. Caroline and Bhaskar Dutta Baruah, founders of Oriental Gardens, expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting its significance on the international stage.
