Google Pay now charges a Rs 3 convenience fee for mobile recharges.

Reports indicate that Google Pay has initiated a convenience fee for users engaging in mobile recharge plans through the app's UPI service. Despite the absence of an official announcement from Google regarding the imposition of convenience fees, this move aligns the platform with others like Paytm and PhonePe, which have long charged fees for similar transactions.

The revelation came to light when a user shared a screenshot online, showcasing a Rs. 3 convenience fee attached to a Rs. 749 prepaid recharge plan from Jio. Notably, this fee is applicable to both UPI and card transactions, as per reports.

Recent updates to Google's terms of service for Indian users allude to these new convenience fees, although it remains uncertain whether this addition was part of the November 10 update. The terms specify that users will be notified about applicable fees before concluding a transaction and stress that fees can be determined at the discretion of the company.

While Google Pay users grapple with this unexpected development, it's essential to note that alternative avenues exist to sidestep convenience fees. Users can opt to recharge directly from the operator's website or app, avoiding the additional charges imposed by Google Pay.
